July 29 Rock River campground to Nitainlaii Territorial Park

95 kilometres

We left the campground and immediately started climbing. After two hours, our average about 8, we had reached the top of Wright Pass. This also is the border with the NWT. There was down hill from the pass but it was interspersed with steep inclines from stream bottoms. It seemed very other worldly. We followed a narrow valley up a few kilometres, stopping once to have lunch. Once out of the valley, we encountered construction, one of the hills seems to be melting and pouring water down on the road causing it to sink. This may have been caused by them removing a lot of material in order to build up the road over the next twenty kms. After the construction, we passed Midway Lake and climbed a hill that seemed to go on forever and then at the top of that we could see more of the same but eventually we reached the spot where we could begin the last 20 kms down to the Peel River. Unfortunately, it was the worst road we have had to cycle on, badly maintained, graded only to bring the larger rocks to the surface. Once at the river, we took a ferry across and rode two kilometres to what use to be a territorial campground. It was on land that was part of a land settlement so it's now operated by the Gwich'in. It was a pleasant place, albeit not very busy - one motorhome and five cyclists.
