July 6 - Prophet River to Fort Nelson

Approximately 92 km from campground to campground

It's like being back in civilization in Fort Nelson even though the town has only 3,000 people.

We got a description of today's road from two cyclists from Colorado who are returning home from Alaska. Their website is at www.alaskatocolorado.com It was relatively easy cycling, a couple of steep hills from river bottoms and then a 7 percent hill into Fort Nelson. Along the way we met 4 cyclists on their way to Pennsylvania. They had started in Fairbanks. We know there are also cyclists going our direction because we see the tracks in the dust along side the road.

We had to go to the grocery store to stock up on about 4 days of food, as the other cyclists have told us not to expect much in the way of cafes or restaurants from here to Watson Lake.

Today we crossed a bridge that is the lowest point on the Alaska Highway - 1000 feet. Tomorrow we should be climbing into the Northern Rockies to reach the highest point on the highway -Summit Pass. It's about 4300 feet. It should be a test of how tired my legs are.
