July 5 Sasquatch Crossing to Lum N' Abners
About 130 kms
Jim got up just before 5:30 to check if the road was open yet. They wouldn't know until 7:00 so we decided sleeping for another hour before going for breakfast seemed like a good idea. We had eaten and packed up to leave by 8:30. Our plan was to get to Prophet River as there is a restaurant and campground with showers
there. It worked out well because the hill that we were warned about last night only took us an hour and a quarter. There were a worrisome few minutes when, beforer 10:00 in the morning there was there was thunder and lightning. It rained a little bit as we coasted in Sikani River where we stopped for a cup of coffee. It quit as we left to tackle the steepest hill of the day. There was gravel on it as well but when a highways truck sped by and drove up the paved shoulder of the left side we followed suit. They have been seal coating the road and there have been large piles of gravel on the shoulder. The amount of traffic has been quite low so it's been easy to steer around them as needed.
It seemed like it was going to be a long day but we broke it up with a stop at Buckinghorse River where we shared a table with a trucker and had a pleasant meal and conversation. With chocolate milk in hand we left the spot knowing we had 88 more to go. Of course there was a hill when we left here.We headed up the hill and from there it seemed flat or downhill for the rest of the day. I took a short break to drink the chocolate milk which gave me energy to keep going. With only 15 km left we decided to break for a coffee and bagel at the
campground. This was our first experience where mosquitos were so many we required repellant. With repellant we were able to relax. Fifteen easy kms later we arrived at the campround. It was a rush to put up the tents as the mosquitos were really bad. With the tent set up I headed to the showers - part of what's called an "open camp" where they get crews staying. There was only one women's washroom while the men's has about six showers and toilets in it. So
